As a little girl, I always wanted a horse, but my parents didn’t have enough faith in me to wake up before dawn to feed one. Looking back now, I’m very thankful for their decision, as I love my beauty sleep!
Thirty years later, the love I have for horses has stayed the same!
Sooooo, its time to put your big hats and derby outfits on, as we’re having a BARREL RACE!! The Triple Crown Equestrian Center has offered their top 8 professional horses to perform a barrel race. It will be fast and highly exhilarating!
In addition to the race, I have many fun activities planned for you, including a BEST DRESSED CONTEST. Its a Derby!! So you have full permission to go all-out: big hat, decked out suit, a dramatic dress, whatever appeals to you. After all, the Derby is no time to be understated. Dress to impress - everyone will anonymously vote for their favorite outfit!
This year, it’s all about giving back. So in lieu of a gift, I’m asking that everyone has fun and bets big on the horses! All the proceeds from the race benefit the Habitat for Humanity of Puerto Rico, which improve access to adequate and affordable housing for families in need of a place to call home.
After living in Puerto Rico for several months, I was heartbroken to learn that since the last hurricane, there are still many families living in homes without running water & electricity. Habitat for Humanity helps low-income families build homes with the monetary donations provided & through volunteer & the families’ own labor contributions. This captivated me the most, families working together to achieve security for their family rather than just being handed a home. Truly a labor of love!
Habitat selects families using non-discriminatory criteria & in turn requires each family to contribute four hundred (400) hours of work distributed between the construction of their home and participation in educational workshops. The construction of the houses is carried out in collaboration with volunteers, private and public donors and with the help of the community.
Once the construction of the home is completed, the selected family pays a mortgage for a period of twenty-five years, with a zero percent interest, & without any profit for Habitat. The real cost of housing is subsidized by Habitat through donations of materials, services & / or monetary contributions from individuals & corporations.
Monthly mortgage payments are entered into a revolving fund to help more families obtain a home of their own.
Finding a hat may be hard but lucky for you I have done the research. Kenzie Kapp creates beautiful hats in Kentucky for the Kentucky Derby. I bought my hat from her so feel free to reach out to her if you are having any trouble finding something. There is a lot that she has not listed on her site
As we know, Etsy has it all!! Including lots of hats & accessories! Different styles, colors, shapes and sizes.
Mens derby attire is so much fun! Incase you want to through in a flare with a hat, here is a place to look
Lets not over think this one!! You most likely have a cute dress in your closet that you can throw a hat, and some accessories and you are ready for the Derby! But if you are feeling like getting something new I would recommend: Nordstrom, The Rack, FWRd.com, Revolve.com are great places to look
We all have a different level of comfort when it comes to shoes so I want to set you up for success! If you plan to drive, you will need to walk a quarter of a mile on a dirt road to the main event area. If you UBER then they will be able to drop you off right at the entrance. A majority of the event will be held on grass. To watch the horse race we will walk back down the dirt road (no more than a quarter of a mile) to the arena. I recommend wearing wedges & bring flats. If you decide to wear heels, I found a cool heel protector that you put on
An easy way for men to spice up an outfit is a Fun, crazy bow tie, pocket square or hat. Which literally can be found at any mens store: Nordstrom, Macys, Marshalls. I always feel like its so much easier for a man to get ready!
